St. Patrick's Day Rainbow and Pot of Gold Toilet Paper Roll Craft

It's March and that means St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner.  Here's a rainbow and pot of gold craft that we loved making.

Pot of Gold Supply List: 1 toilet paper roll, paper plate, tissue paper, markers, glue, scissors, glitter glue

Begin by cutting your paper plate into an arch.  I drew a line for each color of the rainbow and then let Cole fill in the appropriate color.

Color in your rainbow.

Cut your toilet paper roll in half and paint it black.  Allow to dry.  Trim the end of your rainbow so that it will fit down inside the tube.  Add some wadded up tissue paper and paint a little glitter glue on top to give it that gold sparkle.

Book Suggestion: My daughter loves the book What Makes a Rainbow?  Right now it's one that she insists on bringing in the car with her whenever we go somewhere.  This is a great board book for kids just learning their colors or for talking about what colors make up a rainbow.

Paper Towel Roll Robot

This was a really fun project and something that we will try again.  I asked Cole what he wanted to make, he chose a robot.  Then I let him dig through all of our craft supplies and pick out the different items HE wanted to use on the project.  Then we worked together to assemble his robot.

Robot Supply List: 1 paper towel roll, pipe cleaners, pom poms, markers, glue, scissors, popsicle sticks, google eyes, other misc. scraps

I don't have any pictures of the assembly of our robot because we were too busy working on it together.  But here is our finished product.  Cole was really proud of how it turned out and he was insistent on putting a magnet on the back so it can hang on the fridge.

Wandering Wednesday {Cardboard Tube Rockets}

Last week I showed you a few of the items we made for Space Day.  Here are some more rockets from the fabulous Martha Stewart.  I think hers are much prettier than ours turned out, but that's ok, mine were made by a super cute kiddo!

Paper Towel Roll Rocket {Space Day}

Did you know that the first Friday in May is Space Day?  You can learn more about Space Day at their official website.  In honor of the day we made a rocket and a space shuttle.  I'll share the shuttle project with you tomorrow.

Rocket Supply List: 1 paper towel roll, paint, construction paper, scissors, glue
Start by painting your paper towel roll.  As you can see, Cole chose to make a red rocket.
Cut out the construction paper wings and rocket cap.  You'll need 4 right triangles and 1 piece shaped like an eye.  I had to experiment to get the sizing just right on the piece for the top of the rocket.
Cut 4 slits on the bottom of your paper towel roll.  Insert your right triangle pieces and bend them.  Use your glue to adhere the construction paper to the inside of your tube.
Repeat until all 4 triangles are adhered to the bottom of the rocket.
Bend your eye shaped piece of construction paper to form a triangular tube.  I used a stapler to keep it's shape.  Glue your construction paper to the top of the paper towel roll.
Fly your rocket around the house!

Book Suggestion:  We found the book Roaring Rockets at the library this week and Cole has loved it.  It rhymes, it has great rocket facts and the characters are cute, funny animals.  Pretty much all the ingredients needed for a delightful story.

Toilet Paper Roll Bunny Rabbit

Rabbit Supply List: 1 toilet paper roll, paint, google eyes, pipe cleaner, pom poms, construction paper, glue
Paint your toilet paper roll and allow to dry.  Cole chose purple because that's his favorite color.
Cut your pipe cleaner in half and punch it through the toilet paper roll about 1/3 from the top.
Cut out ears from your construction paper.
Glue on your eyes, pom poms and ears and allow to dry.  We ended up using a small piece of construction paper as a nose instead of our pom pom because it was easier to glue.

Book Suggestion: The Story of the Easter Bunny tells the story of how an elderly couple's white rabbit takes over the traditional Easter Bunny tasks once his owners are no longer able to weave baskets and dye eggs.  If the Easter Bunny visits your house then I would highly recommend this book.

Cute Little Bunny Toilet Paper Roll

Bunny Supply List: 1 toilet paper roll, paint, brush, pink crayon, scrap of white paper, glue, scissors, marker, google eyes, cotton ball
Cut your toilet paper roll in half and paint it.  We choose to use pink paint with some glitter mixed in.  Allow your cardboard tubes to dry.
Cut two ears from your white paper and color pink in the center of the ears.  I drew an outline for the middle of the ears and then let Cole color them in himself.
Glue your ears between the two tubes.  I used a chip clip to hold it together while it dried.
Add your eyes, tail and draw on a mouth and some whiskers.

Book Suggestion: Jan Brett is one of my favorite authors.  This winter we loved reading The Hat and this week we've been enjoying The Easter Egg.  A young bunny named Hoppi wants to have the best egg so that he can help the Easter Bunny on Easter morning.  His plans are changed when he discovers a robin's egg has rolled out of the nest.

Toilet Paper Roll Bunny in Grass

Bunny Supply List: 1 toilet paper roll, 1 napkin, scrap of green paper, glue, white paint, marker, scissors, tape, paint brush, google eyes, cotton ball
Begin by painting the top part of your toilet paper roll with white paint and allow to dry.
Trim your green piece of paper so that it will wrap all the way around your cardboard tube.  Then cut grass out of the top of the paper.  I showed Cole how to do this and then let him go at it.  He had a good time cutting little triangles out of the green paper.
Fold your napkin so that it looks like this.
Glue your grass around the bottom of your toilet paper roll and allow to dry.  I use a hair rubber band to keep it in place until the glue dries.
Fold your napkin ears in half and tape them inside the tube.  Glue on your google eyes and fluffy tail and draw on a little bunny nose and whiskers.

Book Suggestion: We found the book Little White Rabbit at our local library and I must say it is just delightful.  Beautiful pictures and a lovely story about a little rabbit with a very big imagination.  Cole noticed immediately that our rabbit looked just like the one on the cover of the book.
